When should a dog with diarrhoea see a vet?
Contact a vet if diarrhoea lasts longer than about 48 hours, or immediately at any point if there is blood in the stool, repeated vomiting, lethargy, a swollen abdomen or a refusal to drink. Puppies, elderly dogs and small breeds dehydrate far faster than healthy adults, so the threshold for calling should be lower for them. What is the difference between a probiotic and a prebiotic?

Does pumpkin help a dog’s upset stomach?

Can I give my dog a human probiotic?
Human probiotics are not the right choice for a dog, because the bacterial strains are selected for the human gut and the dosing is calculated for human bodyweight. Some human supplements also contain sweeteners, including xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Use a product formulated for dogs and follow the weight-based dosing on the pack.
How long should a digestive supplement take to work?
An acute paste is designed to be given several times a day and to show a change within a day or two, which is also the point at which a vet should be involved if nothing has improved. A daily maintenance probiotic works on a different timescale, and is usually given for several weeks before its effect on stool consistency can be judged. Judging a maintenance product after three days is the most common way owners conclude it does not work.
