How often should you apply hand cream?
Apply hand cream after every wash if your hands are dry, and always last thing at night. Washing removes the natural oils in the outer layer of skin along with the dirt, so the useful moment is while hands are still slightly damp, when a cream traps the remaining water rather than sitting on dry skin. Overnight matters because it is the longest uninterrupted stretch with no washing.
What is the difference between a hand cream and a hand balm?
A balm is thicker and more occlusive than a cream, so it forms a longer-lasting barrier on the surface of the skin. Creams contain more water, sink in faster and suit daytime use when you need to pick something up straight away. Balms are heavier and better suited to overnight use or to skin that has already split. Many people use both — a cream through the day and a balm at night.
Should you choose a fragrance-free hand cream?
Fragrance-free is the safer choice if your hands are already sore, because fragrance is one of the most common causes of contact allergy in skincare. On intact, mildly dry skin a scented cream is unlikely to cause a problem. If your hands are cracked, itchy or reacting to products, an unscented formula removes one variable from the picture.
